The Dialectic of the Sacred and the Profane in Ward Badr Al-Salem's Novel "The Virgin": A Cultural Study of Reification and Catharsis
Abstract
The sacred-profane duality constitutes a dialectical horizon in modern studies as it is linked and interacts with other opposing dualities, especially the "self" and the "other" as a result of the difference in visions and perceptions between the two parties; the sacred that is sanctified by the "self" may be absent or its sanctity is hidden by the other, and the profane that some cultures see as profane may be seen differently in other cultures and considered normal, without impurity or defilement in it; therefore, we find man, by his intellectual and religious nature, and perhaps his beliefs and traditions, divided within himself between this controlling duality.
